Last Sunday I made it over to the east side before the pass closed. I'm wondering how this Tuesday will fair. What time should I leave Seattle? 9 am? I know it's weather, it's anyone's guess...

I find that the earlier the better when it comes to I 90 in winter. You will avoid the majority of traffic. Coming back over will be the usual mess of spinouts, clueless drivers and possible closure. Have breakfast in Cle Elum.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. Robert Frost

NWS says rain and 35 over the Pass on Tuesday. Wintry mix to the east along 90 though - that may be the bigger issue

Heavy rain can be a big problem as they often close the pass for avalanche control. From what I can tell, there may be a break in the heavy stuff on Wednesday. It might be a bit colder, but drier.

When there is a "Winter Storm Warning" , Stevens despite being an objectively more difficult mountain road sees fewer closures than I-90. This is due to a number of factors: 1) I-90 is way busier and enough of the traffic are non-skiers with zero to scant experience driving on snow and ice. It only takes one knucklehead to start a multi car pileup. 2) When the "chains required" sign goes up: there are some semis that try to sneak through without chains and it goes pretty well until the last 1/2 mile where the road pitches up and curves to the right. Once the drive wheels start spinning at that point the semi will sometimes end up sideways across all 4 uphill lanes

In said conditions, you should have the Chains on well before its CHAINS REQUARRED. No reason to wait!!! Just throw em on, good set can handle a little bare pavement at decent speeds before you hit snow. Ron Warlow used to just put em on in Monroe.

I’m always amazed how a major interstate highway casually meanders through such treacherous mountains as though it’s no big deal. And then Cle Elum to Ellensburg gets closed, which seems trivial to keep open.
