Yeah I love trying to read the stories of tracks in the snow. Where were these taken?
My winter goal is less ambitious: to survive until spring.

Winter Goals...
1. Don't die shoveling snow
2. Don't run out of firewood
3. X-country ski (virgin)
4. Don't go broke at the bar.
5. Improve my dart game.
6. To not stalk a cougar and hope none does the same, wolves, same.

I love following your exploits, Bootpathguy, and the wildlife photos you've posted are spectacular. I'm curious with the current project: How do you find the initial track? I've heard of hunters driving on roads with fresh snow to find a starting point. I would imagine that you identify areas with significant lion tracks, probably using the same techniques that you use to place your cameras, and then start hiking around there hoping to find something fresh. Is there anything more sophisticated than this?
Thanks for all the great posts. They are quite fascinating to me.

Some lovely mood photos in those posts, BPG. But wow ... looking for those kitties when they're especially hungry ... ooh, no thanks!

I almost always hike a loop or a lollipop loop. I find this the best way to intersect tracks. Last time out, I cut that lion's & wolf's tracks 3 times. Why that lion & wolf were in the same area right around the same time is a mystery to me. My best guess is one was scavenging another's kill. I could hear some noisy Jay's in the distance and I think those wing prints in the snow belong to Ravens. Those were on a cliffy perch overlooking a basin
Yes, I'm searching areas where I have discovered lion territory. Nothing sophisticated

That is quite the bluebird day! A new word to add to your vocabulary is brumation, the reptile version of hibernation

Have had a few more attempts since my last report. Nothing much, so I didn't bother to post.
Got close today though. I'm sure I was being watched. Found a fresh lion cache.
