Good article, but to be picky marcescence is an evolutionary strategy that certain species have adopted as a regular part of their life cycle. The topic in discussion - the leaves killed in place upon trees that would otherwise have shed them normally - isn't actually marcescence and shouldn't be confused by calling it so.
