I saw him live in the early 70's when he toured with Tim Bogert and Carmen Appice. The venue was the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ. Primo seats 5th row center. They opened with Superstition as a cover to Stevie Wonders hit. 
It was incredible. He truly was a icon in the rock world. I feel honored to have been lucky enough to catch him live.

I informed my family that the trio of British super guitar heroes had lost a member, they where like "what?" Never heard of Page or Clapton, and wasn't Beck the artist that did "Loser?"
