Was doing a little virtual exploration on the Topo app this morning and panned over the Lake Cushman area. I remembered back in November 2014 or 2015 taking the family to the Staircase area. When we crossed the bridge from the campground, we saw what looked like a solid run of steelhead (they weren’t all decayed looking like salmon get). Some of the fish were upwards of 30” in length. I didn’t think about it at the time, but the dam is a barrier to any fish coming in from the sea. So I assume these all live their lives in the lake and just come up to spawn. As I mentioned, they all looked really healthy, unlike salmon which definitely look like they’ve come to the end. So am I right that these are steelhead? Or just really big trout that come in from the lake?

Since they shut down fishing for, or at least keeping the char in the Cushman - N Fk system some have grown quite large. They tend to be more steelhead long than chinook thick. Sometimes you can see them from the bridge right above the parking lot. I’d expect you saw char.

Keep Calm and Carry On? Heck No. Stay Excited and Get Outside!
