Heres the deal with dehydrating food: theres no way you're getting enough oils in these dinners to compete with Mountain House!!!!! You ain't making a proper MEAT dish like Mountain House. Needs to be thick and bold! Like the meat sauce one or the BEEF MAC. Those ones satisfy but not these at home ones!!! Not enough oil in these dinners to compete with Mountain House!!!!!!!

When I do longer trips I fill a plastic sneak flask used for sports games/cruise ships with olive oil and put a tablespoon or two into each meal I cook to keep myself... regular. Gives me an extra ~150 calories as well. Also beef/chili mac is gross and has to be my least favorite dehydrated meal.

BigBrunyon doesn't bring a package of precooked bacon for every day? I'm disappointed, a guy with big boots to fill like yourself needs a hearty cowboy breakfast. And a BLT for lunch.

I carry two 2 ounce bottles of oil for the exact reason you stated. One vial is plain and the other is highly seasoned. This is not original thinking on my part, I stole the recipe from someone else.

Mountain House is a pretty poor example - it has a severe lack of meat in their meals compared to other companies. If you know anything about freeze drying....excessive oil is not your friend when food is freeze-dried. Oil makes messes in the machines, lowers how long it can be stored...and did I mention you will be wiping out a thick layer of goo oil from every inner part of the machine? https://mountainhouse.com/collections/entrees/products/lasagna-with-meat-sauce-pouch For example this salt lick has only 12 grams fat. Not exactly "high" in fat. Home dehydrated meals should be lower oil as well. Why? Oil doesn't dry well. At all. It also goes rancid fast in storage. The key is adding in extra oil to meals, on its own. This is why you can find single serving packets of olive oil, and coconut oil.

For us Mountain House causes gastric distress. Since Lynda is pescatarian. We vastly prefer home dried and fresh trout. If I need Meat Fix I have Landjeager.

Sorry, your beloved MH also sucks and blows on protein in the meals compared to other brands. They are old school and not catching up. I do reviews all the time, and I can assure you....there are far better options - for taste, sodium and protein.

It ain't Mountain House then the issue is getting enough oil. A good MEAT MAIN needs to pack a punch!! Deliver big. Sides same thing!! But for the MAIN dish you're gonna need to go big on the oils especially if it's a MEAT MAIN

Lol...this smells pretty trolly. clown.gif Seriously though, most of their entrees are not high in fat. Spaghetti and meat sauce is 8 grams. But it is rich in sodium. Lol.

There is an ignore button. If a stupid post offends you use it.

I have consumed freeze dried meals a couple of years past the expiration date with no problems, yes, I lik to gambl some, anyone else done this? Also FYI, Fred Meyer has a sale on all camping supplies, and MH and Readywise meals 30% off until at least Wed. I picked some up for $6 each with my additional 15% employee discount, score! Plus just in time for my Winds trip, maybe I should buy more for next year? wink.gif

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

I’m amazed at the amount of posts responding to an obvious troll/parody
