I ran into her on my way up to Camp Muir in 2003. She was scolding me for not stopping to tighten my boots.. I asked her if she was the woman who did Rainier in 19 hours last year. She replied: ' Yes. And I'm trying to beat my record!" https://www.thejoltnews.com/stories/bronka-sundstrom-1925-2023,13186

Wow, quite a hiker, quite a life story. OR video is well worthwhile, to see her in motion and her smile. smile.gif

Bronka, Paradise parking lot. June 2022... still going strong at 97! I recognized her as she was coming across the parking lot and snapped this picture of her from the back of the car, then jumped out to say hello and introduced my daughter to her. I can't remember for certain if she had made it up to Muir that day, but I think she did. Definitely an inspiration to many--my daughter was impressed! Beautiful day out on the mountain!

She truly was an inspiration and a delightful person to be around. Be at peace, Bronka.

I will never get the "Speed Hiking" thing, although once Gnome and I were doing an over-nighter to Goat lake and Iron's wife who had just had hip replacement and I think her Mom were about to pass us on an uphill section. I told Gnome that I didn't want a cripple and an old lady passing us...he said he didn't care.

It wasn't about speed hiking for Bronka, not the first time, anyway. In the thread about her from the Saloon that member fourteen410 referenced above, the article from the Seattle Times said the following:
Quote:
...she refused to spend the night at Camp Muir. The spartan climbers’ shelter, with its wooden bunk beds, reminded her of concentration-camp barracks.
