I need to buy a 1- to 2-person freestanding tent, to replace my ancient Jansport Wedge, which has finally degraded to being gummy-feeling to the touch and kind of funny smelling. I use it primarily for kayaking and occasional car camping. No stakes, quick set-up, and sitting-up-inside capabilities are the prime requirements. A relatively small packed size and modest cost would be nice. Can anyone recommend a good candidate among currently available tents?

1-2 person tents
I would recommend considering the REI Clipper, or if you want more room with larger vestibules, the REI Half Dome Plus 2. The Half Dome did win the Editor's Choice Award in 2002 Backpacker Magazine. For Non-freestanding I would recommend the Kelty Zen.

I would second the recommendation for the half dome. agree.gif I have a friend who has it. Light, easy to set up, pretty inexpensive (everything being relative, that is).

Slide Alder Slayer, I have a Kelty Zen and mine isn't freestanding. I bought it back before the turn of the century (always wanted to say that lol.gif ) and I know they've added a window to the fly...did they make it freestanding too? If so, kewl!

A fuxk, why do I not give one?

Bibler I-tent, eldorado, ahwhanee2, etc, etc, etc. Great tents. TB

Kelty ZEN
Oops! My mind must have been in the mountains. Kelty Zen is not freestanding.

Thanks for the suggestions. After talking to some REI store people, I got an REI Clipper. It seemed a little more practical than the Half Dome Plus 2 (which has kind of an awkward looking fly to accommodate all that vestible room). I do really like a freestanding tent that you can erect, then move around to find the exact best ground location. The Clipper gets its first use on a kayak trip this weekend. A good price, too. It's amazing that there are similar tents out there that cost $500-600, although I'm sure some of you could point out some subtleties that justify the extra cost to you...
