Terrific photos. r3h and I did a similar trek this past weekend; Baker is such a great area.

Matt, thanks for the great tr. Nice memories of 2dd and I skiing it last year. For me the highlight was walking to Sherman the inside route of the crater and that bubbling steam vent.

Great report. Great pics. ....... And fabulous luck hitting such perfect weather. I can feel you grinning, Matt, even when you're behind the camera.

Thank you, Janet! I was wondering if anyone would notice the Poe reference.
(Just noticed the typo, it's supposed to be "cask of Amontillado" not "cast")

Awesome video. Mike next to the fang puts it over the top!
Too bad your mic overloaded on wind noise as these cheap built-in ones usually do, but if you could find a suitable wind sound track as a replacement, you'd have a killer clip.

It might have been too early in the melt season when you climbed Colfax, Matt, but when I climbed it later in the summer of 1967 there was a "hot tub" sized pond wedged between the ice and rock at the summit. You would have HAD to have taken an icy dip in it.
The Fang (aka "Rottenspitz Pinnacle") is an impossibly unstable mass of chemically weathered junk. Once a part of it collapsed on our tracks between the time we went to Sherman Peak and returned half an hour later. We would have been squished. After thermal activity increased in Sherman Crater in 1975, the USGS installed a seismometer at the pinnacle's base ( the instrument has long since been removed). Baker has been very quiet, seismically speaking, based on other seismometers, but thermally is the second hottest volcano in the Cascades ( after MSH).

Another comment is that we in the Mount Baker Volcano Research Center call that group of fumaroles the Smiley Vents. Altogether there are literally hundreds of vents in Sherman Crater. As mentioned, Baker is overall the second hottest volcano in the range after MSH. We annually venture into Sherman Crater to take gas samples for chemical analysis, measure soil temperatures, take steam vent temperatures ( as high as 190° F), and do other research. We are always looking for climbers willing to help. In 2016 we will probably be going up in late June for two-three days. Get in touch if interested.
