Thanks. I frankly sort of wondered if I was stupid to be bothering to carry the SLR, tripod and two lenses on our hike yesterday given that I knew we'd be there for the most part during mid-day light. But just a bit before noon, as we were making our lazy way upward, the mix of high clouds (helping provide lots of "fill" light into the shadowed areas) and glancing sun angle on this slope combined to make this well worth the extra training weight in my pack :-) .
And sure enough, while I have no doubt that a more observant photographer would have found more great shots elsewhere on the hike, shortly after this shot the high clouds dissipated, the light became fairly harsh and the wind picked up (making it hard to get crisp shots of nearby vegetation). But I was glad I was carrying the bricks.

Raven Rocks has some spectacular views of the Cheat River and the surrounding mountains. I had come to Raven Rock for the sunrise, but thick fog from the river meant that there were no views to be had. Despite my initial disappointment due to the non-arrival of the morning sun, a sense of peace seeped into me.
I set up this shot as a self 'portrait'. While I was waiting for the camera to fire off the shot, looking over the edge of the cliff, I noticed this beautiful blue jay in the trees below me. Birdsong serenaded me as the shutter clicked. "At peace on the edge."

Decided to visit Lake Ingalls last weekend with hopes of seeing Larch and Mountain Goats with there winter coats!
The FS road was recently opened after the Jolly Mountain fire.
Lots of other people had the same idea, it reminded me of going to the mall the week before XMAS. The parking area at the trail head was full when I arrived at 10AM and cars parked on the side of the FS road a 1/2 mile from the trail head.

Sir Bedivere - those eerie smoking trees on American Ridge are spooky - that's really a great shot you got there.
