The first logout of the season for the Duckabush River trail. A four-day BCRT (Washington Trails Association Backcountry Response Team.) If you haven't done one of these, you're missing out!
- The leaders and volunteers were fun, knowledgeable, and dedicated, everyone worked incredibly hard, and we shared LOTS of laughs.
- Volunteers from the Backcountry Horsemen carried our heavy tools and some of our other gear in to our basecamp. (Well technically their horses and mules did the carrying!)
- We cleared what seemed like hundreds of logs (some huge!) and what seemed like hundreds of miles of very thorough brushing.
- Our team of twelve included FOUR women! No WONDER we got so much work done!
- Plenty of sweaty brows, tired muscles, and wet boots, and everyone stayed safe and reasonably dry.
- Nutmeg performed an absolutely HILARIOUS and heartfelt birthday rap for Snoopy!
- Light showers and sun breaks until Saturday, then the wind picked up and it started DUMPING rain, so we switched from sawing to work on long-overdue brushing and drainage.
- Last but not least, Becca was an outstanding crew leader. She scouted the trail and prioritized the work. Becca and her assistant crew leaders continuously kept safety on the top of everyone’s minds. But we also had BIG fun and got LOTS of work done!
Safety briefing Excellent support from the Backcountry Horsemen A few of the hundreds of logs down across the trail Birthday cake! Teamwork Nutmeg the human buzzsaw Before After! Sawdust Blowdown saws another blowdown HUGE logs cleared! Afternoon planning meeting Plenty of water! Drainage Hardhat after doing double duty as a bucket One long continuous puddle! LOTS of long-overdue brushing! Drainage and more drainage

Well done, wet and weary crew!
Drainage is an "ounce of prevention that's worth a pound of cure" that's often less obvious to those of us who prefer fair weather workparties. The deep trench of a seasonal streambed descending west from Little Hump is a good example of what results from long neglect of drainage. Your willingness to brave the rain is appreciated!
If it were not for many workparties with both WTA and BCHW, we'd not still have a Duckabush Trail the 6.5 miles to the Park boundary, so we wouldn't have one in the Park to Upper Duck, either! It's volunteers that keep the forest trail system together, one stitch at a time, year after year.

I just hiked this trail w/ gongju hiker to Big Hump yesterday in the pouring rain. The trail work that you guys put in was fantastic! The water was clearly being diverted off the trail, and it was blow down free! We very much appreciated the lack of trees across the trail (especially given the fact that we were hiking with umbrellas).

That drainage work looks like fun. It's a lot easier to get it right when it's raining hard and you can see where the water comes from and where it wants to go. Thanks for the hard work. I still hope we get nicer weather on Green Mountain this summer.
