One of my hiking partners recently bought a Mini in addition to the Explorer so more than one person in our hiking group could have one. The initial plan was to be able to talk to each other on the trail or in camp without always being in visual sight of each other. He tried to pair both of them with his IPhone, but when one is working, the other one will not pair. The Explorer still can be used as a stand alone. Has anyone else tried to do this, or does anyone have an idea why both can’t be used with the same cell phone?
After further research, it looks like it is necessary to create a new account with another cell phone, probably because pairing both the Mini and the Explorer to the same phone isn’t the optimum business model for Garmin. (Although they do say they are just following international protocol.)
I'm having a hard time understanding why you would want both devices paired to the same phone if your goal is "to be able to talk to each other on the trail or in camp without always being in visual sight of each other." If you are out of sight of the person with the phone, you are also well beyond bluetooth range of that phone.
That is one of the things my friend realized when trying to figure out if this would work. Thanks for pointing it out, hbb. None of us are tech savvy, so we need all the help we can get.
