I went on the first long hike of the season yesterday and after the drive home was super stiff and could barely walk. I've been using this magnesium lotion for my feet and decided to slather some on my sore muscles. Amazed at how well it worked. I immediately had relief and today I'm not so stiff, but maybe it's coming tomorrow.
Other than drinking plenty of fluids what do you do to speed recovery from hikes?

The biggest thing that's helped me is loading up on vitamin C the day before the big trip. 5000mg is what I aim for but even 2000 or 3000 helps. It's been shown to reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) that you get from a hard workout. You have to have it in your system before the workout. It won't work after the fact.

do another hike. If you are always in pain, you will never notice pain.

another big hike seems to keep me from getting the "second day" stiffies.
Or you could be like Gronk and hit the CBDs.
Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

I've always liked Endurox R4 or anything with a ton of anti-oxidants

Don't get old.
I have mild arthritis or bursitis, after my hike and bike to Lookout Mt, I took an 800 mg anti-inflammatory, washed it down with 3 beers a 3 shots of whiskey, my joints felt fine today, a little stiff, but my head hurt some..
Best thing for stiff joints and arthritis imho is simply to keep moving, stretch, etc, I loosen up fairly quickly now, last year I felt like I was 80.

The times when you really don't want to (because you're still sore from too much fun) are there times it'll help the most. Easy spin, no real exertion, just get the blood moving through your legs.

All of the above, then more stretching.

The salve sounds interesting.
My routine is to make my first uphill/downhill walk in spring at Copper Ck, the one near Staircase. Not even very much of it. Walk up, eat lunch at snowline, walk back down. Slight soreness for a day or so. After that no problems.
I’ve tried running the stairs at LA Fitness all winter. That wasn’t adequate.
Stop at Hardware Distillery in Hoodsport on way home.
Best.

Couple beers. Burger. Sleep.
Then limp in to work the next day, making it real obvious till someone inquires as to my weekend. Then I have earned the opportunity to boast about my huge achievements!!

Nothing works like a good workout. Another hike, some outdoor basketball, it doesn't matter, anything to force all the sore stuff to work.

From what I remember ibuprofen somehow or another actually delays recovery. So unless you actually need it for the pain don’t use it. Maybe someone who knows more than me can chime in.
