No need for name calling. And for those who don't know, people from Washington get rescued, too. Probably in the mountains of Utah and California as well as in the Enchantments.

Since they were over halfway through the loop, what would have been the point of retreating? Curious writeup though - they had already spent 2 nights out, by design, but were "running out of supplies and would not have lasted another night" - huh?

Because I speculate they got to near Aasgard Pass and were scared of descending through that avalanche area... retreating on the route they had taken would have been a prudent choice, but instead of self-rescue, they pushed the "easy" button.
I just find this non-self-reliant behavior more and more common--- and really irritating!
and no, noting they were from out of area isn't name-calling, it's pointing out coming from outside the area tends to indicate they don't have any local knowledge and probably not enough experience to be doing that trip...

People make mistakes in spite of best judgement. It's okay to mess up. What's truly stupid is judging people so harshly when we have no idea about what truly happened, what thought processes were, what their prior experience was, or why certain decisions were made over alternatives.
See? You're judging them based on your own speculation. It seems weird to me to assume that if someone is from CA or UT then they must be inexperienced, when those states have extensive backcountry areas, some of which is similar to The Enchantments.

I get kind of annoyed with today's obsession with saving weight on backpacking trip which often means not carrying extra food, not carrying any kind of med kit, not carrying extra clothing etc etc. Not carrying emergency gear is not "saving weight" it's just plain irresponsible.

Sorry, should have prefaced with 1) former Explorer Search and Rescue, 2) former climbing instructor, 3) former Seattle Mountain Rescue, and 4) spent a LOT of time in the high country in winter and would NOT have expected to be able to push through the Enchantments without a plan to retreat if we had to....
