Looking at this data, since Highway 20 first opened, 37% of the time it has re-opened prior to April 19th, and 60% of the time it has re-opened prior to May 1st. Makes this year seem relatively average.
Edit: For some more fun facts, the latest re-opening was June 14th in 1972 (also the only time it opened in June), and the earliest was March 10th in 2005. Earliest closure was October 17 in 2003, and the latest was all the way on January 3rd in 1990 (it re-opened in May 2nd that year, quite the short season).
My recollection is that there always used to be a substantial ‘push’ from the tourism businesses in the Methow to open by the time the lowland lakes opened for fishing season. That date was traditionally the last Saturday in April….hence the Highway opening just before then. Seems like it used to usually open on a Thursday, for some reason?
Seemed like we were the only people heading over yesterday evening, though many were heading west. A crisp 28 this am in Mazama. No line at the Mazama Store!
