The woke quotes all over the stores and the political activism is also a great way for the market leader to maintain its position and not alienate any customers. Very wise.

The woke quotes are fir their base, non woke go to Cabelas or Bass. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I agree there is a bit of seperation between the two customer bases but I think REI is big enough that its still a mistake to enter politics at all. Plenty of tech bros with money around that will casually drop a few k on outdoor toys and might not be left-leaning. Plenty of REIs in politically mixed suburbs. Politics can inspire those aligned with you, and might be wise for a smaller business for whom alienating a certain fraction of customers is fine so long as they gain more from the political advertising, but your market leaders generally want to keep all their customers, alienating as few as possible. Best to stay out of politics when you allready are a dominant player. Bud light and tesla made this mistake too.

Even if I agree with a company's quotes or stances, I don't appreciate them spending money on things that don't enhance their products or services. When a company indulges in odd hobbies, it often means that their competitors who don’t have such distractions hold a competitive edge. It's an error to restrict this critique to just 'woke' companies. Any business that diverts significant resources to trivial pursuits is squandering them. Take, for instance, Bud Light on one end and the Parler social network on the other.

Customers who are afraid of "woke" can't afford to shop at REI, so that's not a problem for them.

Context: Most brick and mortar retail is struggling right now.

No wonder I don't like REI.

Just like Walmart put a lot of small businesses out of business, Amazon is now the front runner in that regard. Things change, adapt or perish.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

Can we stop using "woke" like it actually means anything? Dog whistle garbage.

I don’t use the word in conversation, I think it’s stupid and lazy. There’s plenty of words that could convey what “woke” means.

Not even close, although I did take a survey that stated that I was liberal in some ways, but mainly conservative.

A lot of people talk about how The Free Market is the best thing ever, until a company caters to somebody else.

Like advertising? I would prefer that all of that money went into R&D instead of marketing too, but since other stores exist, that's not how things work. Inspirational quotes in the stores and the catalogues and on social media are all marketing, and they're cheaper than Google Ad Services. All the inclusivity stuff is marketing. They're literally saying "we want your money even if you're not a traditional hiker." They've been losing money for a couple years now, and more customers equals more money. It isn't anything tricky or underhanded, it's just the traditional trying to get as much money from as many people as possible that we all know and love, aka The Free Market. It's amazing that anybody would have a problem with this.
