Quote: | Daily life is filled with little mysteries but none may be more beguiling than the songs of birds, if one takes the time to listen.
Donald Kroodsma of Massachusetts certainly has. He has devoted more than three decades to the study of birdsong, which he describes as "the finest natural music on the planet." His rigorous research efforts have earned him plaudits as "the reigning authority on the biology of avian vocal behavior" (citation of a 2003 award from the American Ornithologists' Union).
Kroodsma has distilled his lifelong findings in a fascinating new book titled "The Singing Life of Birds" (Houghton Mifflin, 410 pages, $28), which comes with an enclosed compact disc. It is his first book on the subject of his expertise. |
