Enjoyed a ramble with some buddies up to this scottish-themed puddle in the N Fork Snoqualmie region. It would be interesting to find out who thought this lake needed to be called a "loch" and why. At any rate, from a previous visit, I had though Loch Katrine to bit a bit lowlandish at just over 3000' and slightly second rate, dare I say it, compared to many others in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. But I changed my mind today as I realized that this is one of nicer swimming lakes out there. The secret is to hike beyond the mucky, log-jammed shore where the trail first reaches the lake (there's an old fiberglass boat of dubious seaworthiness parked there), and head to the lake's outlet. Swimming from the floating log "docks" to the island is a blast and the water has warmed up nicely. The old logging road going to the lake is getting brushy, but it's not too bad (yet).
Did you head up from the Phillipa lake TH or the Sunday lake TH?
