Finally ditched the rainy cold Northwest for the sunny beaches and snow-free mountains of Hawaii. Despite its concrete canyon reputation, Oahu has a lot of great hiking. For my first hike, I joined a group called Solemates for a hike on the south slope of Olomana, a peak near Kailua. The advantage of going on a group hike is that they know all the crazy routes not found in guide books. This hike involved a brushy but fun ascent up a sharp ridge with great views. The hike leaders installed temporary hand lines to help with some steep spots, although the terrain wasn't too dangerous here. Hawaii is notorious for its insanely dangerous trails on knife-edge lava ridges.
Hiking in humid 75 F air under a blazing tropical sun was quite a shock for this Northwesterner...but I got used to it quickly enough
