Do fish eat skeeters? I hear bats and some birds do. Why do they exist? Do they feed on detritus or just mammalian blood? How can they survive in such awesome quantity with such a little blood supply? What else can you tell us about mosquitos?
Actually, only female mosquitos draw blood (and only for reproduction). There's lots of info on the net, i.e. mosquito.org. I'm much less paranoid now when I pass a swarm of mosquitos .
A few years ago I took my daughter up Alpine LO south of Lake Wenatchee in June. The lower trail was dry. We crossed no streams, there was still snow on the ground above 4500, no standing water, yet the place was thick with mosquitoes. I've seen horrible amounts of skeeters before, usually at a lake, but never under these conditions. Anyone know what was up with that?
Pappy, it sounds you have some hidden lure talent in you. You are welcome to hike 100 yards ahead of me on any trail
hmm...maybe this thread belongs in the FAQs & Bugs section
Mr. Curtis is correct, trout love to eat the larva stage, in fact I have witnessed it many times while taking water samples in high lakes. To keep the adults off my face when doing my work, I light up a cigar...the smoke keeps them away.
