Hobo Style is a Critter creation and it's not usually done on a grill, but I like it. I see you read my trip report and I am glad that you're running with it. Basically hobo style is a cross between urban and wilderness survival, with minimal gear. You know, Fosters beer cook pot and such. Good job.

That's pretty cool! Kinda like how you can boil water in a plastic bottle over a campfire, without melting the bottle (survival technique for purifying water. Probably shouldn't be one's go-to method of purification biggrin.gif ).

I have boiled water and cooked meals in those chinese take out containers on backpacking stoves before. It worked fine, but also took a little longer than most folks would like. The main problem is not enough surface area on the bottom of the containers to transfer heat. It was an experiment in making homemade, backpacker style, pot-less cooking. I packed the dry ingredients into the boxes, took a stove, added water, heat, and viola! The other issue was volume in the pack, those take out containers aren't really an efficient use of space. If one could find a short, squat paper container that covered the burner on a stove better... I suppose one could take empty, nested, containers and carry the dry ingredients in a zip-lock, but I never took it that far and I went back to commercially packaged "bag" no pot meals.

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

No bag, no pot packpacking? Grim! Also, I'd like to thank all of you for using beer cans, an invention of mine, as pots. I invented them very shortly after I invented beer. And the mop.

Thanks Tvashtar for the beer can pot. I have improved your idea with a beer can that has the top cut off and a wire bail attached. I am also the creator of the 'Critter Cup'. The Critter Cup is made from professionally folded aluminum foil. Look for the Critter Cup on a trail near you this summer.

You must have a lot of YouTube avatars... Look, if I hadn't invented the internet, you wouldn't be reading this right now. Beer can pots have been available commercially for, oh, about forever. You should have filed that patent when you had the chance!

Hobo style is not the same as being a hobo. Thru-hikers kinda go hobo style when they "cowboy camp". However, hobo style is usually done by beginners and can be done in a tent as well(usually a crappy tent). It is basically just carrying cheap crap with you and eating hotdogs or canned goods. Hobo style is usually a laughable style most often done by car campers. When my friends and I go hobo style it's usually because I'm with a bunch of party animals who know very little about camping. Sometimes Wichita and I camp hobo style, just to switch things up. I manage to keep a bug fearin' city girl from Wichita, Kansas comfortable in the woods with what may be too little for a hobo to survive.
Almost hobo style. Fancy pads for Wichita and I. Even Sheba had a pad.
