Teenagers aren't to blame for every misdeed out there. Could have been a park ranger.

It's been six months since a post in here... now the snow is gone... put it on your radar screen.

Tumac's a pretty oft-visited peak with relatively easy access to the masses...not quite as bad as Mt Si, but close. Perhaps this should be destined for more remote locations?

The Traveling Register is alive and well

|
To the good people at NWHikers,
We are writing to tell you that we are deeply chagrined because it is WE, not some hoodlum teenagers, not some crabby ranger, but WE, two middle-aged avid hikers and lovers of the outdoors who have had the traveling register in our possession for almost a whole year, until last weekend, when we finally left it on a peak on American Ridge, safely tucked into an old fire ring.
We came across the register last August on Tumac Mountain, and planned to take it on our next hike to an unnamed peak near Naches Peak a couple of weeks later. Unfortunately, we forgot to put it in our packs. Then, because of the fall storms, we didn't get out again until snowshoe season and didn't take it because of the problem of leaving it safely in the snow.
Come spring and summer, we have no excuse whatsoever except we FORGOT about it until last weekend. It wasn't until last night, when we finally logged on to NWHikers for the first time that we realized the consternation we had caused. We are truly sorry. Please accept our sincere and heartfelt apologies!
We did think to document the placement - see photo. We left the register on the 6310' knoll just above Kettle Lake, approximately 1/2 mile off the American Ridge trail (#958), and about one mile west of the intersection of 958 with the Goose Prairie Trail (#972). See the description for American Ridge in "100 Hikes in the South Cascades and Olympics" (hike #16), for more detailed directions.
Laurie, Steve, and Kenya, the Mighty Mountain Chihuahua (personal best: Old Snowy/Goat Rocks 16+ miles & 4000+ feet in one day on four skinny, little Chihuahua legs! No kidding!)

lauriejhampton, Welcome, and thanks for the lesson on patience.
From the beginning I knew that there was going to be some interesting stories told from the traveling of the "NWHTSR", but this one I find most amusing and entertaining.
I'm glad you put it back into play so others may have a chance to add to the fun and history of the "NWHTSR"
BTW, I hope that you stick around and share your hiking adventures with us all.
Cheers!
Richard

I must confess, after logging on to NWHikers and realizing what a big deal it was, we did briefly consider running back over there and removing the incriminating pages we had written in the register, and leaving it anonomously!

Laurie, for my part, I'm glad you didn't -- it would have made me and Action Betty look like total idiots!

Welcome to the site, LJH!
My brother has two Chihuahuas. I can't imagine them hiking up 16 miles of anything. Kenya is to be commended!

I believe so unless the writing has worn off.

When we left it on American Ridge last Sunday, the writing on the register was in good shape. You'll have no problem finding and identifying it. BTW, the wild flowers were for the most part gone last weekend. But the view of Mt. Rainier, if clear, is well worth the effort.
