An unexpected snow hike made our morning a most fun workout. Near Olney Pass where we registered, which is close to Spada Lake Reservoir some 25 miles out, we parked and headed up the dirt road northwest, soon fully snow covered. We were glad of poles. Snow's beauty rewarded the relentless climb, and after an hour we reached a clearing, and lovely views. We got sun early on, except west to the Sound and Olympics, buried in a fog bank. Pristine loveliness was visible. We basked in warm sun on our first rest.
Not long after we came across another clearing on this ridge road, by a painted yellow big gate, open, and enjoyed more lovely views 180 degrees east. When machine tracks finally stopped, we could go no further without sinking in with just our boots. We regretfully turned back, probably not a half mile from road's end, enjoying all that snow that doubled as a beautiful cover over a very trashed area. But though we saw artillery debris a military compound would be proud of, we heard not a single shot our whole morning out. We had these gorgeous views to ourselves from about 8-11:30am. An unexpected stilll winter hike that whited out views as we returned.
