well, large flows of water can be dangerous.. 8lbs per gallon.
as long as the pool where the water enters is somewhat shallow, it should be somewhat safe.. the real danger is if the pool is deep, the undertow can pull you under and you won't float in heavily-aerated water..
fwiw, the only waterfalls i've played in were in hawaii on the big island near hilo. cascade and olympic waterfalls would be rather chilly i would think...
BPJ and I were just up there (Lipsy Lake/Otter Tail Slide). There's not much water coming down. You can swim and slide on a closed cell pad (T-Rests work, too, but it's hard on them).
FYI there is a trail to a nice campsite by the river accross the road a little way upstream from the Lipsey Trail. Look for a split rock on your right.
