If I just woke up and realized I live in Wisconsin, I'd be out on a ledge, too.

Well, there is a little bit of encouraging news, they are no longer on the ledge:
Quote:
By Thursday afternoon, rescue coordinators in contact with the pair via cell phone convinced the couple to move off of the ledge, but there was still concern for their wellbeing.
I'll bet the SAR "fast team" are some pretty awesome guys and gals. Best of luck to them.

I can't stop marveling at the SAR's folks. Don't forget how much emotional support they need when the outcome is less then the best.

Wow, those SAR guys must have hauled ass to get up there so quickly. I surmise from the reports that they dropped one full pack, leaving only the other full pack (hence the single sleeping bag and part of a tent). So, my question is: Why would they be on an 18-inch ledge "on the face of" (or anywhere near) Spire Point with full packs? The only answer is that they were way off route. Had they intended to climb Spire Point (a side trip from the PT), they would not have been carrying full packs. I'm so confused, but so glad the SAR folks got there.

I heard on tonight's news that they did indeed get off route...but who knows, the media hasn't been accurately reporting this story.

Opinions expressed here are my own.

If the media thinks they were on the PCT, then I guess the media would certainly deem them off route. hockeygrin.gif But seriously, being off route would explain why they had full packs when bagging a peak (media says they lost a sleeping bag and partial tent, so I assume they had that stuff with them on Spire). Typically you wouldn't have all your stuff with you to go bag sumpin' along a traverse.

From the information I was able to dig up...it seems they are a dude and a chick between mid 20's and 30's. Given the difficult route they opted on, I would say a lot of difficult situations could arise with the weather. We may even know them on this site. God bless, may SAR's bring them comfort.

...wait...are we just going to hang here or go hiking?

You should actually read the posts in the thread. Lots of info and no digging.

Spire Point is accessible within one day from the Downey Creek trailhead. It's a long haul (about 12 miles) with a stretch of difficult trail going up to Cub Lake from Downey Creek, but I'd imagine the SAR teams are very well conditioned and traveling as light as they can. Best of luck to these folks.

If this part of the story is accurate, they're staying put one more night: http://www.komonews.com/news/local/27587449.html Seems, among the 3 local stations, KOMO 4 is providing the most frequent updates.

This being my first real year of hiking, is this a normal thing or are people just going up unprepared?
Not referring to the two folks involved, the answers to your questions are unfortunately yes and yes.

According to one newscast the chopper could not get to the stranded party but they were able to drop a SAR team at a lower elevation within a couple miles which is how they got there relatively fast.

Fact check? That's hard.
