What do you like to have with that in the backcountry?

Is that Mountain House or Backpacker's Pantry? Don't you owe me a beer?

A big juicy cheeseburger. With the stuffing on the side. No, wait. Hold the stuffing, I'll just have the cheeseburger, thanks.

Good company and a bottle of Old Undershorts.

I'm with Damian. Stovetop is awesome enough in the backcountry to stick with just eating that. Filling, salty, tasty, warm, nicely toasted around the edges if you cook it just right -- that is just about as good as it gets when you're way out in the woods. The Ol' Undershorts is a key part of the meal as well. You can't neglect that.

Sometimes I'll make some gravy from one of those gravy mixes you get 2 for a buck on sale. Back in the day, I used to take a couple of those Swanson 'boil in bag' frozen meat+gravy packets (turkey usually) and just make sure to use them the first night. That was pretty tasty. Stovetop is hard to beat for backcountry food. Fast, simple, and it lives up to it's name...stuffing.

I've never done the stuffing in the backcountry, but I do make instant mashed potatos at least 2-3 times per trip. Gooey, salty, and warm which is just what I'm usually craving. I think some stuffing, some mashers, and maybe some chicken in the little pouches, then throw in some huckleberries as a cranberry substitute and you've got yourself a decent thanksgiving.

I'm going to be having some in the wilderness this Sunday night. I will pre-cook a pork chop at home Saturday night, and freeze it. I will put it into a smell-proof bag, and wrap my sleeping bag around it in my pack. Then I will cook the stuffing the usual way (add boiling water), and heat up the chop by putting the bag it's in in hot (not boiling) water for a few minutes. With a small romaine heart kept cool and un-crushed inside the sleeping bag as well, I'll have a home-style meal with little fuss or extra weight. This is my favorite kind of meal on the first night of a bp trip.

I'm really looking for a protein that is more durable than a first night kind of protein.

Freeze-dried turkey works but I have yet to find any that tastes really good. Pouched chicken is considerably better tasting - if one gets Valley Fresh brand (it is gluten free and doesn't contain fillers).
