We're creating some tastey meals but counting the calories shows an average of just 300 to 400 per meal and that's for a larger one. I could add more ingredients but our average 4 oz meal rehydrates to something quite filling as-is. I have this vision of us stuck in the center of the Winds, begging passer-bys for energy bars so we can make it back to the TH. Any suggestions for additives that won't ruin the taste?

Olive oil and bacon are both good options.

Ditto to olive oil, as Allison said. I make a lot of my own dehydrated foods and add oil to them, usually carried in a separate bottle. Or if it's anything with a creamy sauce you could add powdered whole milk (Nido) or powdered coconut milk too.

I carry EVVO packets - one per person, per meal. Cheese of any kind - be it shelf stable Parmesan to the Laughing Cow wedges that are creamy (an shelf stable). Drop a couple in a meal. Fats are not always high in calories but fill you up faster - and keep you fuller longer.

Parmesan cheese powder, one of those little packets adds about 20 calories. A tablespoon of olive oil adds about 100 calories. Both make most trail foods taste better too.

About perfect for fat I can say - most are 7 grams fat per serving dry (and hiker meals tend to have 1-3 servings of it!)

Nuts, toasted or otherwise go with most meals and have good fat and are light weight and easily available besides. Cashews, peanuts, walnuts, pecans, almond chunks/flakes. If you package them separately you can add them to dinner or use as a pre-dinner snack.
