There a people who are asymptomatic carriers of Giardia. If one shares food with you without proper hygiene, you can get the Giardia. This can happen in the city as well.

Oh my, major sympathy to you! Any possibility the filter failed? I know you can't let that one freeze, but I can't recall if dropping harms it or not...

If you got it right from a spring, it's likely you didn't get it there....? Could have even been that someone deposited some solids on Spider Glacier and you inhaled tainted crystals if you kick stepped anywhere. (just thinking outside the box, here in an attempt to defend the lovely Buck Creek dizzy.gif ) On the bright side - you'll lose weight. But seriously, man, that's too bad. Get well soon. flowers.gif I hope your bout isn't too terrible.

Sorry to hear this Hulk. Get well soon. Let me see... does this talk about not washing hands imply you can get it from yourself??
Don't know about that...You can get it from someone else who did not wash there hands. Yes Mike seriously...i did jump in that thing.
With that much ice on the lake i was not in very long. lol.gif
Actually I would think the layer of mosquitos littering the surface would keep most polar bears afloat.

Sorry Hulk - Sucks to be you! But the REAL question is - If you got the bug from another human instead of a water source, what are you gonna give THEM in revenge? lol.gif

Giardia has certainly been found in small community water systems. water from a well is also a potential source.

This just in the morning's mail: http://www.backpacker.com/gear/ask_kristin/354?utm_source=newsletter01&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter01 I've wondered the same thing, how do you *know* that your water filtration method(s) are working? Or if they're even necessary? I guess you don't until you "get it". Is that about the way of it?

Can you share with us what the doctor told you about it? Some say it's no big deal unless it is not treated. Others claim you will never be the same again in many awful ways. I was told the former by a doctor, but that was decades ago.

It's not a big deal unless untreated. However even with treatment i will need to adjust my diet possibly up to a few weeks. No dairy. mad.gif No milk, no cheese, no ranch on my salad. mad.gif mad.gif Avoid caffeine, carbonated drinks, no booze, no fruits unless bland. Cook veggies Yep that about covers the four food groups....no wonder people loose weight as a "side affect" rolleyes.gif

I recall a climbing trip to the Columbia Icefields area in Alberta back in the early 80s when the entire Banff water system was shut-down due to Giardia. Real pain for the restaurants. -vic

What is the treatment? Antibiotics? What kind do they use? I wonder how long it would have to go before treatment to be a long term problem. I can't imagine though if you are miserable you wouldn't seek treatment. lol.gif
