Most of the forums I've read seem to stress carbs for hiking. Well, I've been following Dr. Mercola's recos on "intermittent fasting". Carbs during and after exercise shut down the mTOR pathway, which inhibits hGH release. This is important for me at age 66. On hiking days I take tomato juice/whey cocktails before, during & after the hike (usu. 20+ mi.) - no carbs until supper-time of the day after the hike. I also double up on beta-alanine (i.e., 2 gm.) - 1 gm. @ breakfast, 1 gm. mid-day.
What I've been wondering about is GPLC. I recently started taking 4.5 gm. just before the hike, but am wondering if spreading it throughout the day might improve anaerobic performance. Any other users out there?
I live in Virginia, where we have these little bitty hills. I wish we had a Ranier or Hood in my vicinity!
Thanks,
GB
