Driving FS-4315 from the Salmon La Sac Road up to the top (5000') of Sasse Ridge is one sweet way to start this hike... where a 30 second walk from the car put us on the Sasse Ridge Trail... as we headed east using a combination of the Sasse Ridge Trail, Jolly Mountain Trail and Jolly Creek Trail to reach the saddle (5500') that separates the Salmon La Sac Creek drainage and the Jolly Creek drainage... where we left the Jolly Creek Trail and continued north on a good path toward Point 6050 (aka Skookum Peak) and Point 6394 (aka The Louvre). There is a difference of opinion on the names of these two high points... some feel that 6394 is Skookum and 6050 is The Louvre... and some have the exact opposite view on the subject. For those who feel that the name "The Louvre" makes no sense, Snowdog points out that all three forks of Paris Creek originate on the west side of these two high points. The Peakbagger.com website shows The Louvre as 6394 and Skookum as 6050... and that is what I'm going with in this report... on the other hand, does it really matter?... just do both of them and call it Loukum. Other than being off trail, reaching Point 6050 was just a fairly steep hike... as we left our good path and slogged up the 100 feet of elevation to the summit... then followed the ridge NE for a mile over to Point 6394... where we found it necessary to do some Class 2/3 moves at the summit block in order to touch the true summit. On our return we used the good path all the way back to where we connected with the Jolly Creek Trail... where 500 feet of elevation greeted us... as we truly slogged up to the junction with the Jolly Mountain Trail... leaving a mile of nice trail to the Jolly summit (6443')... where we took a short break before hustling back to the car in order to beat the 6:00 pm rock-blasting closure in the Snoqualmie Pass area. 10.3 miles roundtrip, gaining 3431 feet of elevation. GPS Track and photos of our trip to Skookum Peak, The Louvre and Jolly Mountain. ..

I was saving this one to do as a snow trip--would that make sense?

The Jolly Mountain summer trail from the Salmon La Sac Road up to Sasse Ridge is 4.2 miles, gaining 3200 feet of elevation... then basically add what we did to that total for a snow trip. You might be able to reduce some of the mileage by being on snow... but you can't reduce the elevation gain... smile.gif And if you want to wait for some of FS-4315 to melt out before starting your snow trip, know that there are a couple of gates on the road that probably don't open until road conditions will allow.

Mehitabel - Depending on the snow depth, you wouldn't be able to start from where Ragman et al did - you couldn't get up the Sasse Ridge road. That adds a few miles and a bit of elevation from the Salmon la Sac Road. Rog - figures that your directions would be from The Brick! Probably didn't get to stop if you had to get back across the Pass . . . they probably do a "to go!" I wanted to see the group summit shot ON the summit of the Louvre! lol.gif agree.gif winksmile.gif Definitely the route to take to get all three in a day. Nice work.

This was a fun trip when we did it in summer years ago, one I'd repeat. Interesting you were able to drive up to the TH now. When we were up there Oct 13, 2011 the gate was locked at 3000' for some wildlife seasonal closure reason. Maybe they lock it right before deer season starts?

The Back Court List has the higher point named as The Louvre.

If you plan to use FS-4315, check with the Ranger Station (probably Cle Elum) about the gate on 4315. It may not open until July or August. ---------------------------------------

Wish I had read the comments and not just the TR. frown.gif Yes, it certainly seems that way because 4315 was gated much lower today at more like 3000' and I believe that hunting season is in full swing. Modern firearm deer season to be more specific. Assume that is the rationale for closed gate as there is no snow in that area. Still doable from that gate but you probably want to set your alarm and get moving earlier considering the daylight of October. Rather than sleeping in, planning to drive to 5000' as I did and finding out at noon that you won't make your intended TH. Had to bail to Sasse. redface.gif

When I tried driving up in the summer it was gated at ~3000' as well. Need a webcam on that gate!

Good to know I shouldn't count on the gate being open.
