I love shooting goats. You probably do too. If you have any shots you especially like, I would love to see them. Goats are an important part of the fun in the Cascades. This female left her kid and trudged over to me as soon as she saw me approaching Headlight Basin. Her coat is ready for winter. You can see every hair. The horns look like they have been sharpened and are ready for use. A lucky shot for sure. This was early October 2012.

These two were cute and endearing as we set up camp, but quickly showed their true saltaholic colors. The mosquitoes weren't nearly as annoying.

rbuzby, that first one is great - I like the selective focus on it's face, but throws the background into a nice blur. up.gif

Funny in all my hiking I have not seen very many goats. In places where "everyone" seems to see them, I have not. I.E. Headlight Basin, Mt. Ellinor etc... Ok not the best shots, but my goat sightings are limited. I still find it amazing seeing where they can go and feel like it is nothing. These are from like August of 2008 from the Rock Mountain summit area at quite a distance, even with a decent zoom lens.

And of course "the goat" that at least in 2011 seemed to like to hang around the saddle between Iron and Tenaway Peaks.

In 2009 The "friendly" mountain goat who had been following an overnighter coming from Mt. Townsend. I was heading up via the Dirtyface ridge trail. He was heading down. At least after our encounter he finally lost the trailing goat as it went off down the hill off the trail.
Friendly Mountain goat. Had been following a backpacker. When he saw both of us he shortly departed down the steep bank.

Got Goats - yes I do. Our one encounter with a goat on the Iron Peak Trail in the Teanaway in 2010. This was the first time we came across a goat on this trail. What was really funny - our friend had just asked "Do you ever see goats on this trail?" And a bit later - who show up!

I wish I had a better camera when I took these. That first shot would've been a prizewinner.

Those are good shots TAH. The quality is good enough on that first one, you just needed the goat to be a little closer to the edge. "The (infamous) goats of Ellinor" sounds like a lost chapter from one of Tolkien's books. Was that where the guy got gored in the leg and died?

Enchantments:
These insidious creatures escaped from a seekrit, clandestine government facility and fled into the mountains where they now subject unwary hikers and climbers to full spectrum Jedi Mind Control. Don't look into their eyes or they will enslave you...

I think that was in different part of the Olympics. Someone was injured on Ellinor, but I don't think there were any fatalities. Ellinor used to be the go-to place for goat sightings, but they got too aggressive and the park had to shut the trail down for a while to teach the goats to fear humans.

Poor guy had a broken horn. He snuck up on us and wanted to chew our ropes. Yellow Jacket tower climb (Leavenworth, WA.) (pre DSLR)
Seen in the Enchantments, on the trail somewhere around Nada Lake.
