A lot of the old trail is still visible on satellite especially in talus fields. Looks like they have to detour around private property instead of using the entire old trail.
Is Box Canyon a cool spot or something? Just curious why CCC built a trail to there and stopped.
It looks like there are trails that continue past Box Canyon a ways as well.

Instead of a new trail, how about some maintenance on other existing Lake Chelan trails and camp spots? A portion of the trail to Milham Pass from Domke Lake was cleared recently up to Emerald Park. The rest of that trail from Emerald Park over Milham Pass is not. Domke Lake and Hatchery Creek campgrounds have been closed since as far back as 2007 and just need to be cleared out. Why those weren't addressed at the same time they were clearing trail in that area? Kinda odd since it is an area they can use chainsaws in. The Domke Lake area was well used before they let them go to pot. Yet now there is money available and USFS wants to build a new trail?

Well, to be sure, that wildfire that burned the campground to cinders hasn't done anything to increase useage.

Sure that makes sense in general.
But for this project, my guess is that the Lake Chelan Community Open Space Vision and its sponsors (City of Chelan, Lake Chelan Trails Alliance, Chelan-Douglas Land Trust, the Trust for Public Land) have been working toward this since 2016 for this trail in this location and are probably good funding sources. From 2016 to the status of it now is lightning speed !
Maintaining existing trails along the lakeshore are outside of the scope of the project, its stakeholders, and funding sources.

Can you expand this statement?

That's kind of a bummer. Looks like maybe 2000' cumulative gain just to get down the the lake and back. Are people willing to do that for a trail that doesn't really go anywhere and is 3.5 hr from the urban center? Also I agree funds might be better spent on maintaining existing trails, but Kim is suggesting this comes from a different bucket, so that sounds reasonable. Again I'm just curious about how much use it would actually get. Looks like it would be open to bikes so might become more of a mountain bike thing although I'm not sure who wants to do most of their gain on the way out.

The trail gets you along Lake Chelan shore without requiring the expense and logistical challenges of the boat. That's a huge attraction. It would be a perfect shoulder season day hike.
All the other mountain bike trails in this area are open to motorized dirt bikes. So it would be nice to have one trail open to mountain bikes, but not dirt bikes.
