Horowitz began his "National Dinner Tour" last year as a way to explore the idea of community among strangers. Since then he has driven a leaky 1984 Toyota RV from the organic chicken farms of southern California to the hallowed halls of Yale University, in search of food and conversation -- which he documents on his Web site, www.ineedtostopsoon.com.

Touron is a nougat of Arabic origin made with almonds and honey or sugar, without which it would just not be Christmas in Spain.

I love things like this! What an odd and interesting twist of events. I won't comment on the "is it art" question other than to say (well I guess I am commenting) it's more of a social experiment. What the control is and what the question is, I don't know. At any rate, I get a bang out of things like this.

Invite him on a hike to Pilchuck or Three Fingers and make him dinner at the top of that.

Art is an adventure.

He could even lead the pack mule up with a stove and pots and all the other making for a gourmet meal. After he's been et, the mule's still useful.

What a great idea!! Wish I'd have thought of that when I was in my 20s. About it being art, there was a transformation of art within western culture starting in about the 16th century where the art of the everyday scene became a popular means of representation. That trend continues to this day. One of the key elements of this type of art was that representations were noted for their lack of idealized or romanticized presentation. A painter named Peter Bruegel the elder is considered one of the first master practitioners of this art form which art historians and mere posers such as myself call genera art. Can there be a better performance art form than spending time and a meal with strangers? It would be a wonderful series of events to experience and chronicle by narrative and/or photo. Bet that the closest most of us have come to this kind of random intimate encounter is by hitchhiking as a form of experience rather than a means of travel. Thanks for the post! up.gif up.gif

And thanks for YOUR post, too--that was a really helpful critique.

I am reminded of a trip I took a few years back. I was out for twelve days touring the NW and beyond on a motorcycle. I had been out for nine days or so, and was getting bored with my own company when two nice-looking fellows offered me a can of beer in the motel hot tub at the place I was staying in Whitefish, MT. They ended up inviting me out for dinner, which seemed okay, and when I got there, there wer 26 people there. They were all very conservative folks from Calgary. We had a great time, and they refused to let me pay for dinner. Was it art? I don't think so, but it was great fun. up.gif
