A shame but not too surprising. CA had some of the best bargains for camping & state park entrance fees. Some of the state parks rival national parks for scenery, as they do here. They were probably undercharging for a lot of them. $25/night for tent camping is WAY too much though if that comes to pass. Upper Yosemite had simple campgrounds that just a few years ago charged under $10/night during high season. CA started charging parking fees for beach parking in the late 90's at least, before we did. People got around it by parking (legally) along the highway and walking down to the beaches, avoiding the fee lots. Worse was trying to avoid the poison oak between the road and beach- it's all over the place down there.
In a wider sense, the parks' basic problem is that there is a fortune to buy new land, after voters passed more than $9 billion in parks and water bonds over the past three years, but there is no money for rangers because of the state's deficit. Bond money can pay for maintenance, repairs and land purchases -- but not salaries, which make up more than two-thirds of the parks budget.
