Nah, I find those too salty nowadays. I used to like them... until I realized how salty they were... and then i started getting grossed out by them. Definately not low fat... heh.

Excuse me? When you hike and sweat you NEED salt and fat. Ever heard of salt tablets? Ever cramp up when hiking? That's what their for! Why would you want something lo-cal when during a hike your body needs calories. Those granola bars are full of sugar and carbs and also work well because that's also what your body needs. Fritoes are the perfect trail food. Put some in a tuna, alfalfa sprout, pita sandwich and enjoy. I eat like a pig when hiking and still lose 5-10 pounds during the wonderful week I'm on the trail.

Amen to that. On all the wildfires sunflower seeds were usually handed out freely. I usually always have a pocket full when I head out.

From Costco - Kirkland Signature Trail Mix.
I love it - almonds, cashews, peanuts, and M&Ms. Rich in (good) fat and calories. Just what I need for fuel.

Fat and protein are not as efficiently digested as carbs. So for a daytime snack during long hikes you are best off with snack food low in fat and and high in carbohydrates.
Salt tablets are no longer recommended for cramps and should be avoided.

I like Cliff bars, or any of the carb specific bars that are available. Brian is right. You should be constantly munching on carb sources throughout the day if you're going to be moving.

I love the combination of an orange and one of those new-mixed-berry-trail-mix bars. Provides a quick boost for the descent. I also carry nature's valley bars that come in a package of two as well, although I find them to be a bit crumbly.

I like mixed nuts (salted) while heading up trail, and I always try to bring an orange for the hike out. They are big and heavy, but it's a ritual with me to shuck my pack maybe three quarters of the way back from a hike and eat an orange. When you're tired and your throat is parched there is nothing like it.
