Very gorgeous fire photos Slug.
My guess is that the most burnt part of the trunks is the height of the downed fuel that burned. When I was last through there I noticed the deadfall was about waist-high. I even commented in my last trip report a few years ago that the place was a tinderbox.

Yes, I agree, tinder box. The portion of the trail right near the TH didn't burn, and it's a miracle it didn't, nothing but dead branches and closely-spaced small trees.
But I must say, the forest that burned was one of the least visually entertaining forests I have ever hiked through.
Some observances in lieu of a trip report:
The hike is still as nice as it ever was, the burned parts were not the "good stuff".
The one best campsite at Sunny camp survived in excellent shape.
The road was not bad, if anything a bit better than the last two times I went.
It's better to go in October, when everything is a nice toasty-brown color, and the bugs and other people have all left for the year.
The grass is only about 25% grass. The rest is tiny ferns, small flowers, and plants that look like a relative of the aloe plant.
