Back in 1946, you had to get a permit to build a fire at Lake 22. But I don't believe you needed a trail parking pass. After your fun campout, you could head up to Big Four lodge and have a nice meal. Nowadays you could too, if you brought food and a stove.

I was going ask if the Big 4 lodge was back open, lol.

While volunteering at a museum, I found them in a box. 'Tis fun opening boxes. Every once in a while it's Pandora's box though.

I remember getting campfire permits from the Verlot Ranger Station in the 60's.

Wow. Just seeing that form, the typography, the print, the pen ink and such just gave me a flood of nostalgia. Those were the days. That would have been issued almost exactly a year from the end of WWII. Thanks R.L. ~z

The Lake Twenty Two Research Natural Area was enacted one year later in 1947. The current NFS website states that camping and fires are not allowed at the lake. I wonder if that dates from 1947. If so, that was one of the last permits issued.

I don't think the camping and fires prohibition came before the late 80's.

I think it was 25 cents for a campfire permit at Chelan State Park back in 1973 0r '74.

Then you could have been a pal and brought lunch up to the guy manning the Mt. Pilchuck lookout!

From the permit:
Quote: | ...bury or burn all refuse and leave my camping place in a clean and sanitary condition. |
Well there's a nonsequitur. I guess "pack it out" never occurred to them.

"Bash, Burn and Bury" was the guideline until "Backpacking One Step at Time" was published in 1972 and the idea of "If you can carry it in full, you can pack it out empty" started to gain traction.

Does anyone know of a cabin that used to be at the lake?
My Dad's story of getting to the lake, finding snow up past the cabin eaves and digging down to get in has gotten a little murkier in my memory, but I'm pretty sure he said Lk 22. That would have been just before or just after ww2. I'm wondering if the cabin was removed when the Natural Area was created.
