Only MCaver would be kind enough not to spoil the surprise ending of a 50-year-old book!

Aw, Slug - lots of folks haven't read it! I've read that thing 451 times, and to tell you the truth, I can't quite remember how it ends.
Each time I read it (and other books) I find something new.
This time, I'm noticing that Mrs. Montague is as physically bland as she is intellectually, spiritually and emotionally. I had never noticed the physical description of her before. Don't know why, the narrator tells a lot about her.

Quark...in answer to your original question.....Robert Heinlein said, " if you take 1 cent and compount the interest on it for 1000 years, it'll be worth $10000000000......but that's only worth 3 cents in the newly valued currency."

451F, the temperature at which book paper catches fire...
My copy which might be a first edition c.1953 has no mention of a second dumbed down version. It does say that F451 first appeared as a short story in Galaxy Science Fiction in 1950 under the title, "The Fireman"
(More info than you wanted)
