The new scoring system really affected the women skaters, to say the least. Interesting evening.

I saw the women's figure skating live on CBC. Then I saw it again in the evening on NBC. I could tell Irina Slutskaya from Russia was getting tired toward the end when she missed a late jump. I really wanted her to improve from the Silver in Salt Lake City, 2002 to a gold in Italy, 2006. I hope she can be happy with Bronze. But Sasha Cohen, while losing points on her two faulty jumps, made points on spins and spirals as well as presentation. Her and Irina were close even after the short program and finished within a point or two of each other as well. Kudos to the Japanese, Arakawa was awesome. I really like the new point scoring system. It's fair - you get points for what you do and deductions for what you attempt but mess up. The old system was horribly flawed. Nancy Kerrigan had a final higher score but wound up with a Silver medal because she didn't have a majority of judges picks at the time to beat Oksana Bayul for the gold. My favorite winter sports are the skiing, aerials, curling, and speed skating. I'm intrigued by the ski jumping and biathlon events. agree.gif

I'm trying to remember how many Olympics I saw Oksana in. I do remember one performance by her that I thought was the most spirited/inpsiring of all the skaters in medal contention that year. up.gif

Yep, that's what her website says, so that must be the performance I remember. up.gif

I'm not much on the closing ceremonies, but next time for the Winter Olyimpics is Canada, and one of our local opera stars, Ben Heppner, just sang the Canadian National Anthem. up.gif If you like opera, you've seen Ben sing many times here in Seattle.
