Having been here in the summer and fall, it was time for a winter(esque) visit. Road was in good shape, save for a few logs that I pulled out of the way. Made it to about 3800' before deciding not to push my luck driving in the snow any further. Headed back down to the switchback at 3700' to park. This left 1.7 miles of road walking to the trailhead. Snow conditions weren't great (crunchy Cascade concrete) but Pebbles couldn't get enough of it.
(Phone pics only - didn't lug the real camera along for this trip)
The snow became deeper and fluffier on the south side of the ridge. Some views of peaks near and far opened up.
We soon reached the gully around 4600'. Conditions were good for crossing yesterday but there will definitely be substantial avy hazard later in the season.
From there it was pleasant wandering on a gentle descent to the lake basin.
The snow in the basin was knee deep. We plowed our way to the lake's edge for a cold but leisurely lunch.
Soon we packed up and headed back the way we came. Back in the woods, the snow was a bit slushier and the tree bomb assault intensified. Before long, we were back at the road, where the snow had softened considerably. This made for a pleasant stroll back down to the car.
On the drive down, the woods darkened around 4pm and by 440pm, it was lights out. Only four more months until spring 🙂
