It's all about who you know to get in at GLACIER NATIONAL PARK. Mostly just a who's who these days.

cdestroyer, have you been in the park lately? I spent 6 months (cumatively) of my life there back in the 90's, backpacking and mountaineering. Fabulous memories. Great place for non technical mountaineering and I got to do most of the high peaks and alpine traverses.
Just wondering what the scene is like now. I see reports of front country crowds, permit hassles. I suspect the backcountry - the Nyack or Jefferson Pass for example - is still magnificent.

Same as every national park, to hike or camp you have to plan far in advance, pay more, and fight the bots. We managed to get a spot in Devils Garden next spring but it was a fight.

We found plenty of open sites in Natural Bridges, Canyonlands and Arches a few weeks ago. Brrr. Camper heater failed one night, 17F.

17F is normal for this part of the world. One does not simply get by with a single puffy.

destroyer,
Hope it gets better for you.
I was hoping to find someone who had obtained an off trail "undesignated" permit lately, presumably one to do one of the alpine traverses. Back in the 90's we literally needed the sign off of the district ranger for one of those permits. They got to know us and it became pretty smooth.
Just wondering what it is like now for those permits.
