Broken Hand is located a half-mile east of Broken Top Mtn. The Bend Glacier on Broken Top feeds a beautiful tarn that sits between Broken Top and Broken Hand. Trailhead: Take the Cascade Lakes Highway two miles north of Mt. Bachelor and turn right on the forest service road to Todd Lake… continue on the rough road past the Todd Lake trailhead for a few miles and park on the side of the road east of Moon Mtn at 7150’. We headed cross-country on easy terrain, passing Ball Butte (8091’) on the east side… gave back a little elevation and hooked up with a trail that took us to the tarn (8000’) between Broken Top and Broken Hand… we continued north around the tarn to the ridge (8200’) for views of the Three Sisters… then east for a half-mile to the summit block of Broken Hand… here we hiked just below the cliffs on the south side of Broken Hand and found the easiest access to the top on the east side… some Class 3 climbing is required for the last 150 feet to the top of Broken Hand (8376’). From Broken Hand we headed cross-country to Ball Butte where we went up its northeast side and down its south side and back to the car. Six miles roundtrip, gaining 2100’ of elevation. The earth tones and flowers made for a fantastic color day… skip doing Broken Hand and Ball Butte to reduce the trip to 5.5 miles and 1300’ of elevation gain. Pictures of our Broken Hand and Ball Butte hike. ..

Nice trip. I haven't seen any pics of the Broken Top area in summer before. But your title scared me. I thought you were referring to one of your own hands, not your destination.

ditto.gif I guess a broken hand would be preferable to a broken foot, but glad to see it was a false alarm.

Me, too. I rushed in here to see if I could offer any bandages. Glad there is no need for it.
