Sept 9 is the Ride 542 bike race from Glacier to Heather Meadows. The road will close at Canyon Creek at 7:45 am and not reopen until the last rider is back down the mountain.
If you have hiking plans that day, make sure you're past Glacier by 7:30 am and plan to not be able to drive back into town till after 2:30-3pm.

I would happily ride FROM Heather Meadows TO Glacier- riding a bike up that grade is nuts!
of course, some people think hiking up a mountain is nuts, too.

We were up at the Mountaineer Lodge last September when they ran this race. It was nice hiking in the morning; there weren't many people around and the trails were quiet. Good...as long as you didn't plan to drive to another area... We had to change a couple of hikes.

What about Unicycles ?
|
|
|
When Beernut and I were returning from Silesia, we saw a guy riding a Unicycle up the highway on Powerhouse grade ( Excelsior campground vicinity). I figure he must have been training for the race. Appeared very labor-intensive to me. Look Ma, no hands !

Ok, a unicycle is a new one for me.
Thanks, wolfs, for the Coal Creek info. I knew they were gonna do that work, but didn't know when.

You mention the Highway will close at Canyon Creek, so do you know if the Canyon Creek Road itself is open? We were planning on Excelsior that day.

I don't know if the road's closed before or after Canyon Creek Rd. The notices don't say.
Canyon Creek Rd itself is open under normal circumstances.

Bumping this up so it's visible.
The road closes at Canyon Creek Rd at 7:45 am, but the first heat of bicycles takes off from Glacier at 7:30 am --- so plan on being through Glacier before 7:30 if you want to avoid the mess. The road will re-open when the last cyclist gets back down the mountain.

On a related note, I noticed there is a Mountaineers group from Everett scheduled for a Lake Ann hike on Sunday - the itinerary says they're leaving 'early' due to the distance to the TH.
It didn't mention the road closure so they may not be aware of it. That's quite a drive only to be stuck at the bottom of the mountain. Their departure time is scheduled for 7:30
Since I'm not a memeber of the Mountaineers I wasn't able to get the trip leader contact info to give them a heads up. Maybe some kind nwhiker member who's also a member of the Mountaineers might take a moment or two to send them a note.
On second glance, that group still has 10 openings for the day. Maybe it's not an issue. Linky...

Bumping this up to let everyone know:
Quote: | Mt. Baker Highway (542) will be closed east of Glacier at 6 p.m.
on Tuesday, October 23 until 6 a.m. Wednesday while a production company films a Cadillac commercial. The closure is in effect from Glacier 18 miles east to the Mt. Baker Ski Area. |
