I have been reading some of the recent trips to Spider Gap and Lyman Glacier... I thought a little older picture of the glacier might be interesting. A friend and I took a 10 day horse trip to the Buck Pass, Fortress Mtn, and Miners Ridge area in August 1986. We had a camp set up north of Suiattle Pass for a few days and decided to take a day ride over to the glacier.
I was reading "Clan of the Cave Bear" at the time and remember relaxing and reading by the glacier in the sun... with the glacier creaking and groaning in the background... It is something that I still can feel and remember... :-)
Anyway, here are some scanned pictures...
Yes I was there surveying the terminus and mass balance in 1986
and
This year I took a picture from the 1986 terminus point, 200 meters from the current glacier.
Notice the ice cliff that has been a big feature over the last 25 years is much diminished this year. It is partly buried by the snowpack but that was only 5 meters deep, and the cliff even in 2008 was over 20 m high above the waterline.
