I had been to D.C. a few times (including serving in the Old Guard of the U.S. Army in the 70s), but had never really done anything in NY, other than transit through on the way to other destinations. I was fortunate enough to be accepted to an awesome week-long program at Columbia University on teaching writing to elementary students. I combined this with a 4 day visit with my older son who lives and works in D.C.

The East Coast had some oppressive heat in July, and usually August is more of the same but some cooler drier air from the north came in and the weather couldn't have been nicer for my 13-day trip. cool.gif In my best hiking estimation, I put in probably 4-7 miles everyday and managed to get a bit of elevation descent/ascent from subway platforms. My non-study time consisted of eating, taking a subway to different neighborhoods, eating, exploration, and eating. eyes.gif I quickly developed blisters from a flimsy pair of Nike cross-trainers on pavement. I popped into an Eastern Mountain Sports and picked up a comfy pair of Oboz Sawtooths, which solved that issue. (BTW, great shoe up.gif ) *While NW Hikers TRs generally reflect the natural beauty of our area, I include this TR to destinations not usually found on this forum, mainly because hiking (walking, if you please) was involved on a grand scale, nature shots are included, and anyway, the pictures turned out well. tongue.gif
So I went to Valhalla!
